FWPD: Automobile theft investigation with infant inside vehicle

Stolen Vehicle with One Month Old Infant Inside

Date/Time of Incident: March 8, 2011 / 1:49 p.m.
Location of Incident: 4400 block of Gaywood Drive

On Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at approximately 1:49 p.m. the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a home in the 4400 block of Gaywood Drive reference a report of a possible abduction. A 1998 blue-colored Chevy Silverado parked outside of the home was left running and unattended with a one-month old male infant inside the vehicle. While mother and a friend were loading an item from the bed of the pick-up truck and into the home, someone got into the vehicle and fled the area with the infant inside the vehicle.

A perimeter was quickly established and all available patrol and investigative units immediately flooded the area in search of the stolen vehicle. A short time later and just a few blocks away, the stolen vehicle was located abandoned in an alleyway in the 4600 block of South Park Drive. The infant was inside the vehicle unharmed and was reunited with his mother.

The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the department at 260 427-1222.

The department reminds everyone to NEVER leave infants/small children unattended or alone in vehicles. Annually the department investigates an average of five hundred (500) stolen vehicles, many of which are reported to be left running and unattended at the time of the theft. The department recommends not leaving a vehicle unattended while it is running.
