Graduation dates moved after snow days add up

News release from Fort Wayne Community Schools:

Graduation dates moved after snow days add up

The 2011 graduation dates for Fort Wayne Community Schools’ high schools have been moved back by one week after six snow days pushed the last day of school past the originally scheduled graduation dates.

Graduations for the district’s five high schools were originally planned for June 10 and 11 at the Coliseum. Commencement ceremonies will remain at the Coliseum but will now take place June 17 and 18, according to the following schedule:

[list type=”black”]
[li]South Side – Friday, June 17, 6 p.m.[/li]
[li]Northrop – Friday, June 17, 7:30 p.m.[/li]
[li]Snider – Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m.[/li]
[li]Wayne – Saturday, June 18, noon[/li]
[li]North Side – Saturday, June 18, 1:30 p.m.[/li]

“We understand moving graduation disrupts many plans families have in place,” Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson said. “But we are required by state law to have all students in school 180 days and need high attendance every day to maintain accreditation. We can’t reasonably expect seniors to come back to school after they have already walked across the stage.”

So far this winter, FWCS has had five delays and six closings because of weather, the most in at least a decade. The last day for students was originally scheduled for June 7. The district has two built-in make-up days in May (May 13 and 27) when students will be in school. The four additional days have been added on to the end of the school year with the last day of school now scheduled for
Monday, June 13. Any additional closures will continue to be added on to the end of the year. Twice in the last 10 years FWCS has closed because of weather in March.

Students and parents will be notified by their schools, and inserts will be printed for invitations with the new dates. In the future, FWCS will schedule graduations more than a week after the last day of school. Traditionally, the district has held graduations on the weekend immediately following the last day of school.
