FWCS Board members announce support for teachers

Fort Wayne Community Schools Board President Mark GiaQuinta announced today that the Board will consider a resolution in support of teachers at the Board meeting on Monday, Feb. 28.

“Teachers are feeling as if they are under attack with so much legislation directly affecting their jobs. We want to let our teachers know that we appreciate their work and dedication to our students,” said GiaQuinta, who was joined by other Board members for the announcement.

For many years, FWCS and its teachers, represented by the Fort Wayne Education Association, have had a mutual respect for each other and a collaborative relationship that allows the two sides to meet regularly to work out any issues.

“Collective bargaining has not prevented us from achieving great things for our schools and for our students,” GiaQuinta said.

It was through collective bargaining that FWCS was able to take on major reforms at the 11 LEAD Schools. Through negotiations, FWCS and FWEA agreed that staffing for the 11 schools would not be based on seniority – a monumental shift in hiring practices for a school district.

At the Board meeting Monday, the Board will vote on a formal resolution supporting teachers. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Board room at the Grile Administrative Center, 1200 S. Clinton St.
