Senate approves Wyss’ emergency alert system bill
Fort Wayne lawmaker says state needs simple, easy to understand travel warning policy to protect HoosiersSenate lawmakers voted 50-0 today in favor of legislation creating a standard travel alert system in Indiana.
Sen. Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne), author of Senate Bill 267, said his proposal now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
“Currently, we have counties following different emergency alert policies which is confusing for residents, media and emergency personnel,” Wyss said. “It’s critical Indiana implements a simple travel alert system that’s easy for all Hoosiers to understand.”
Wyss said he crafted the proposal after severe winter storms which hit the state earlier this month underscored the need for a uniform emergency alert system across the state.
Wyss’ proposal would place key terms describing local travel advisories – already established and recommended by the Department of Homeland Security – in Indiana Code:

[li]”Advisory” or routine travel may be restricted in areas;[/li]
[li]”Watch” or conditions are threatening to public safety and only essential travel – like driving to and from work – is recommended; and[/li]
[li]”Warning” – the highest advisory level – meaning travel is restricted to emergency personnel only[/li]
