New University Community Conversation Program at IPFW

(January 26, 2011) – University Community Conversation (UC2) is a new community engagement program sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). Details of the program were announced at a news conference on Wednesday, Jan. 26th, by IPFW Chancellor Michael Wartell and COAS Dean Carl Drummond.

UC2 will feature a wide variety of related events each year, all centered on a specific theme. The inaugural year’s theme is “The Promise and Problems of Democracy.” The first event of UC2 was a Town Hall Meeting featuring Indiana Speaker of the House, Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) on January 26, 2011.

UC2 events will feature a balance of university and community speakers and presenters and will incorporate the latest digital resources and
social media to initiate, expand, and sustain community conversations. “A goal of UC2 is to keep the conversations going beyond the events,” said Drummond. “We want the community to sustain dialogue through our social media and Web sites.”

The second UC2 event will be a lecture featuring former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke, who is now president of the Brady Campaign and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. His lecture, “Tragedy in Tucson – Impact on Gun Legislation and the Accessibility of Elected
Officials,” is at 7 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 3, in Neff Hall, Room 101.

Other UC2 events will include:

  • A major public event, using various multimedia platforms, comprised of four to six twelve-minute presentations broken up by shorter commentaries
  • A One Book, One Community program which includes moderated discussions
  • Events to explore the history, current status, and future of democracy – locally, nationally, and globally
  • A special activity to coincide with the July 4th celebration on the IPFW campus
