Orthopedic Manufacturer to Build New Facility in Fort Wayne

Press release from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation:

Orthopedic Manufacturer to Build New Facility in Fort Wayne

Greatbatch Medical, a surgical orthopedic product and medical instrument manufacturer, announced today it will build a new facility here, creating up to 76 jobs by 2014.

Greatbatch Medical currently has an operation in neighboring Whitley County which it will relocate to an 80,000 square-foot facility in Allen County. The company plans to start construction on the new building this spring and will invest more than $17 million in the project.

“With a record number of new deals last year, Indiana’s life sciences sector is on a roll,” said Mitch Roob, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. “Today’s significant investment from Greatbatch is even more proof that Indiana is home to the orthopedics capital of the world.”

Greatbatch Medical currently employs more than 100 associates at its existing northeast Indiana operations, where it specializes in instrumentation for hip and knee replacement, trauma and spine for global customers including many of the Indiana-based orthopedic OEMs.

In 2008 Greatbatch, Inc. (NYSE: GB), parent company of Greatbatch Medical, acquired Precimed, Inc. allowing the Greatbatch family of companies to expand into the more than $20 billion orthopedic market. Headquartered in New York State, Greatbatch has additional Indiana locations in Indianapolis and Warsaw. The company employs 3,000 associates globally.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Greatbatch Medical up to $750,000 in performance-based tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. Allen County will consider additional property tax abatement at the request of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance.

“We’re pleased to welcome such a high-caliber company bringing high-wage jobs and a considerable investment to our community,” said Nelson Peters, Allen County commissioner. “This project will grow our life sciences cluster and improve our status as a location that is hospitable toward that industry.”

Greatbatch Medical is the second northeast Indiana medical device company in one month to announce expansion plans. In December, L.H. Medical Corporation announced it will invest $5.4 million to expand its production operations in Fort Wayne which will double the company’s current workforce of 65 employees over the next three years.
