Reed Timmer, Meteorologist from Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers, to Close Global Professional Development Event Hosted by Fort Wayne Community Schools with Inspirational Address
Unique global virtual professional development event focusing on empowering educators to improve student achievement in science education through educational technologies and the latest digital content

WHAT: Fort Wayne Community Schools and Discovery Education will host Reed Timmer, meteorologist and extreme weather enthusiast from Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers for an inspiring address to educators on Saturday, Jan. 22. Teachers will earn six professional growth points for participating. Timmer’s remarks will close SCICon 2011, an exciting day of professional development and training for area teachers on the latest educational technologies and digital content they can use to engage students in science lessons and ultimately improve student academic achievement. Discovery Education is the leader in digital services for the classroom, and a division of Discovery Communications whose networks include Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel.

SCICon 2011, through both in-person and virtual events, offers attendees from around the world a series of information-packed sessions on a variety of topics, including teaching through an inquiry-based approach, and combining digital resources with hands-on activities and how to implement digital content to create student focused digital environments. Over 1000 educators from the United States and around the world attended SCICon 2010’s virtual and in-person events.

Timmer, Discovery Education, FWCS Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson, and district educators share a commitment to engaging today’s students in all academic disciplines through the effective integration of educational technologies and dynamic digital content into school curricula. Recognizing that their core mission is to achieve and maintain academic excellence through a rigorous and relevant educational program, district officials are creating modern, dynamic, flexible learning environments that improve student academic achievement and develop productive, responsible, civic and globally minded adults who prosper and serve.

Recently, the Indiana State Board of Education officially adopted the Discovery Education Science Elementary Techbook for Indiana and the Discovery Education Science Middle School Techbook for Indiana for classroom use. This significant achievement means school administrators in Indiana can now purchase Discovery Education’s digital services for science instruction instead of static, traditional textbooks.

About Reed Timmer
Timmer‘s first official storm chase was at the age of 13, when he intercepted a severe storm in his front yard and was pelted by golf-ball size hail that destroyed his family’s video camera. Ever since that day, he’s been obsessed with extreme weather and storm chasing. Timmer pursued this passion by studying meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. After documenting a massive F5 tornado that struck Moore, Okla. on May 3, 1999, Timmer became even more obsessed with extreme storm chasing. Since then, he has driven over 50,000 miles every year from the Mexican Border to Canada, and has captured more than 200 tornadoes on film. In addition to storm chasing year-round, Timmer is currently working toward a doctorate in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma.
