Share the Warmth Coats for Kids 2010 campaign reaches over 3,000 children

(December 16,2010) – With much gratitude to the community, the partners of Share the Warmth; Coats for Kids have wrapped up the 11 th annual collection. 3,017 coats, plus mittens, hats and scarves have been distributed to children in our region this year. Requests for the coats came from 50 area schools and social service agencies as well as individual families.

Including this year’s total, over 27,460 coats have been donated by the Northeast Indiana community for kids in need since the winter of 1999-2000.

Staff and volunteers from the Volunteer Center at RSVP, Peerless Cleaners, Scott’s Foods, Kroger, US 93.3 and WANE-TV worked together to promote the campaign, collect, clean and distribute new and gently used coats and brand new mittens, hats and scarves to local children.

In conjunction with Share the Warmth, the Komets Hockey Team and Mad Ants Basketball Team offered incentives to fans who donated a coat at special home games this season.

Additional organizations including Shindigz of South Whitley, Bethlehem Woods Community, Glenbrook Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center and the Allen County Sheriff Reserve also got involved by donating quantities of warm coats. Cash donations from Lassus Brothers Oil and anonymous contributors enabled The Volunteer Center @ RSVP to make a customized purchase at a discount for outstanding coats requested.

As in past years a number of light weight jackets collected during the campaign were not included in the totals. Those items (over 2,800) were accepted by two local clothing banks for those in need of spring or fall outerwear.

The Share the Warmth Coats for Kids partners include The Volunteer Center @ RSVP, Peerless Cleaners, and Scott’s Food & Pharmacy, Kroger, WANE-TV and U.S. 93.3.
