Challenger to City Clerk Sandy Kennedy announcing Tuesday – 12/14/2010

In an AFW exclusive, Zach Bonahoom, son of Fort Wayne City Council Attorney Joe Bonahoom, has shared he will be announcing his run for the City Clerk’s office in 2011.

The announcement will be made Tuesday, at noon at the Allen County Republican Headquarters at 125 W Main St. in downtown Fort Wayne.

Bonahoom’s release states:

At 12:00 PM, Tuesday December 14th, 2010, at the Allen County Republican Headquarters Zachary Otto Bonahoom will announce his candidacy for City Clerk.

“As a small business owner…I have the knowledge necessary to determine and implement the changes needed to bring the City Clerks office to a modern efficiency level. My first goal will be to usher the city clerks office properly, efficiently, and most of all frugally into the 21st century.”

Mr. Bonahoom is a small business owner in Fort Wayne and licensed Indiana Realtor. Zach is the son of local attorney Joseph G. Bonahoom and grandson of Otto M. Bonahoom of Bonahoom and Bonahoom LLP. Zach Bonahoom has owned and operated Bonahoom Music DJ service since 2002. He is also the proprietor of a property management business and a website salesman for locally owned Specialized Printed Productions. Zach has also worked for Senator Richard Lugar locally. Finally, Zach has extensive experience working with people, spending a year working and traveling aboard a cruise ship where over 50 different cultures and religions were present amongst his co-workers.

He exclaims, “The current City Clerk, Sandy Kennedy has served for 28 years and I believe it is time for a positive change in the City Clerks office.”

This could become one of the more interesting City races in the upcoming cycle.  One of the determining factors yet to be discovered is whether Bonahoom will be facing Democrat incumbent Sandy Kennedy.  Kennedy has served as City Clerk since May, 1983 and is considered by many in the community to be untouchable.  However, she had shared with this reporter in 2008 that she would not be seeking re-election in 2011, but would rather be supporting Deputy Clerk Angie Davis for election.

But here’s a video clip from October 30, 2010 at a pre-election rally held by the Democrats at the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union Hall 166, in which Mayor Tom Henry, who had been recognizing a litany of personages and almost forgot Kennedy, states they were ‘this close’ to convincing her to announce her re-election that evening.  But she wouldn’t.

The City Clerk’s office has been under Democratic control for 40 years.  The last Republican elected to the office was in 1967 and was Zach’s great uncle, Fuad G. Bonahoom who served for one-term.  Can you name his Democratic successor?
