Soap Bubbles Shape Next Lunch with an IPFW Scientist

(November 29, 2010) – Explore geometric concepts through bubbles at the December Science Central Lunch with an IPFW Scientist session. Adam
Coffman, associate professor of mathematics at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), will lead “Soap Bubbles and Geometry” Saturday, Dec. 11, at Science Central, 1950 N. Clinton, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program is open to the public at a cost of $16 per person; $10 for Science Central members. Lunch is included.

Participants will discover examples of interesting geometric shapes and their applications in science by using soap films and soap bubbles. “There will always be new things for mathematicians to discover about patterns, numbers, and shapes, and new applications in understanding the physical world and the world of computers and information” said Coffman. “Even if you aren’t planning a career in math, science, or engineering, many opportunities in your future will involve math somehow!”

The Science Central Lunch with an IPFW Scientist Series is designed for families with young people 8 and up and plants in both the young and most seasoned participant a budding interest in science. After each presentation, which includes a hands-on activity, participants enjoy lunch with the presenter. Advance reservations are required, and families with young people ages 8-14 are welcome.

For more information on the series, visit www.sciencecentral.org or call Kathy Larsen, Science Central special programs manager, at 260-424-2400, ext. 427. For reservations, call ext. 451.
