URGENT – WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NORTHERN INDIANA
440 AM EST MON DEC 6 2010

…LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING THROUGH NOON TUESDAY FOR SOUTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN AND NORTHWEST INDIANA…

…LAKE EFFECT SNOW ADVISORY THROUGH NOON TUESDAY FOR SOUTH CENTRAL LOWER MICHIGAN AND NORTHEAST INDIANA…

.CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO REMAIN FAVORABLE FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANT LAKE EFFECT SNOW INTO TUESDAY. MUCH COLDER AIR WILL CONTINUE TO SPREAD SOUTH OVER THE RELATIVELY WARM WATERS OF LAKE MICHIGAN CAUSING BANDS OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW. LAKE EFFECT SNOW BANDS ARE EXPECTED TO OSCILLATE THROUGH THE REGION. SNOWFALL RATES AT TIMES OF 1 TO 3 INCHES PER HOUR ARE EXPECTED…WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR SPOTS EXPERIENCING PROLONGED RATES OF 2 TO 3 INCHES MONDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY TUESDAY ACROSS SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN AND NORTHWEST INDIANA. LESS INTENSE SNOW BANDS WILL AFFECT SOUTH CENTRAL LOWER MICHIGAN AND THE REMAINDER OF NORTHERN AND NORTHEAST INDIANA. IN ADDITION…GUSTY WEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS WILL LEAD TO AREAS OF BLOWING SNOW…ESPECIALLY TODAY INTO EARLY TONIGHT.

GIVEN THE NATURE OF LAKE EFFECT SNOWFALL AND INHERENT DIFFICULTIES IN FORECASTING…PRECISE FORECASTS OF SNOW AMOUNTS REMAIN DIFFICULT. HOWEVER…THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL TOTALS BY MIDDAY TUESDAY AND FOR SIGNIFICANT TRAVEL IMPACT DURING THIS TIME FRAME IS CERTAIN. INTENSE SNOW BANDS ALONG WITH THE EXTENDED DURATION OF THE EVENT SUGGESTS THAT MANY LOCATIONS IN THE WARNED AREA WILL RECEIVE IN EXCESS OF A FOOT OF A SNOW…WITH LOCALIZED AREAS WHERE SNOW BANDS PERSIST THE LONGEST RECEIVING IN EXCESS OF TWO FEET OF SNOW BY DAYBREAK TUESDAY… ESPECIALLY IN BERRIEN AND WESTERN CASS COUNTIES IN MICHIGAN AND NORTHEAST LAPORTE AND NORTHWEST ST JOSEPH COUNTIES IN INDIANA. LESSER AMOUNTS… GENERALLY IN THE 4 TO 10 INCH RANGE…ARE ANTICIPATED IN THE ADVISORY AREA.

…LAKE EFFECT SNOW ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON EST TUESDAY…

THE LAKE EFFECT SNOW ADVISORY IS NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON EST TUESDAY.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS…TOTALS OF 3 TO 8 INCHES BY DAYBREAK TUESDAY…HIGHEST AMOUNTS OVER NORTHERN WHITLEY COUNTY.

* OTHER IMPACTS…VISIBILITIES WILL BE HIGHLY VARIABLE WITH INTENSE SNOWFALL IN NARROW BANDS. UNTREATED ROADS WILL BECOME SNOW COVERED AND SLIPPERY. TRAVEL ON AFFECTED PORTIONS OF INTERSTATE 69 AND US HIGHWAY 30 COULD BECOME HAZARDOUS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A LAKE EFFECT SNOW ADVISORY MEANS LAKE EFFECT SNOW IS FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DIFFICULT IN SOME AREAS. LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS TYPICALLY ALIGN THEMSELVES IN BANDS AND WILL LIKELY BE INTENSE ENOUGH TO DROP SEVERAL INCHES IN LOCALIZED AREAS. USE CAUTION WHEN TRAVELING.
