Visiting Writers Series Features Writer/Poet
(October 21, 2010) – The Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Visiting Writers Series will host writer, poet, editor, and translator Lawrence R. Smith Thursday, Oct. 28. Smith will read from his work at noon in Walb Union, Room G21-G21A. The reading is free and open to the public.
Smith is the author of two novels, Annie’s Soup Kitchen and The Map of Who We Are, both from Oklahoma University Press (2003 and 1997); a book of poetry, The Plain Talk of the Dead (Montparnasse Editions, 1988) and four books of translation. His fiction, poetry, translations, and essays have appeared in The Paris Review, New American Writing, Sulfur, The Iowa Review, kayak, The Michigan Quarterly Review, and many other journals. Smith edited Caliban, an international journal of literature and the arts, from 1986 to 1996, which is currently revived as an online magazine (www.calibanonline.com).
Smith was a professor of English for many years at Eastern Michigan University, teaching creative writing and modern poetry, and has held visiting appointments at the University of Rome, the University of Hawaii, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received two Fulbright-Hays Fellowships, in 1973 and 1987, and a Michigan Council for the Arts Grant in 1986.
The IPFW Visiting Writers Series brings three to four writers to Fort Wayne annually. Since 1992, the series has brought approximately 70 writers of various genres, including poetry, essays, short stories, and novels. The series is made possible with the generous support of IPFW’s Department of English and Linguistics, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and the College of Arts and Sciences. The program is also grateful to College Access TeleVision at IPFW, which records and broadcasts Visiting Writers Series events, and to anonymous donors.
