IPFW Mental Health Day open to the public – 10/14/2010

Press release from IPFW:

IPFW Mental Health Day Open to the Public

Everyone experiences stress, sadness, and anxiety from time to time – it’s part of life. But when changes in mood and behavior interfere with one’s ability to function normally, it could be a sign of depression. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), nearly half of all college students report feeling so depressed at some point in time that they have difficulty functioning. The APA also reports that one out of four young adults will experience a depressive episode by age 24, and that 50 percent of people with an eating disorder meet the criteria for depression.

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) wants to make sure people know that they don’t need to suffer in silence. The university is hosting IPFW Mental Health Day on Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Walb Student Union, first floor, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

IPFW Mental Health Day will include an education/information fair, individualized depression and anxiety screenings with a mental health professional, a “brain food table,” and a “de-stress zone.” Also, a “laughter yoga” session will be offered at 1 p.m.

Two special workshops will be held at the event:

  • 10-11 a.m.: “The Influences of Parenting on the Positive Mental Health of Children,” Walb Student Union, Room G21 Presented by Bill Utesch, Ph.D., director of the IPFW Community Counseling Center.
  • Noon-1 p.m.: “Taming the Cravings,” Walb Student Union Ballroom (Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m.)

Presenters will be Ann Reidenbach, R.D., M.P.H., nutrition therapist with Consulting and Counseling Associates, and Brooke Farrington, C.E.D.S., L.C.S.W., with Farrington Specialty Counseling, Inc. Participants will learn about anxiety and how to tame it, about how to solve stress and anxiety without relying on food, and about cravings.

IPFW Mental Health Day is sponsored by IPFW/Parkview Student Assistance Counseling Program; IPFW Behavioral Health and Family Studies; IPFW/Parkview Health and Wellness Clinic; IPFW Department of Athletics, Recreation, and Intramural Sports; IPFW Nursing Department; IPFW Peer
Educators; and Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association.
