Press release from the American Red Cross:

Indiana University Alumni Association to Hold 14th Annual IU Blood Donor Challenge
The 14th annual Indiana University Blood Donor Challenge will take place across the state and throughout the nation from now until Oct. 22, 2010.

The Indiana University Alumni Association has challenged Indiana University fans throughout the U.S. and Indiana to partner with them to reach their goal of collecting 3,000 pints of blood during this event.

“The Red Cross appreciates all IU students and fans who participate in this event to help save lives,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. “We encourage all Hoosiers affiliated with IU to schedule a blood donation appointment before October 22 and make a lifesaving difference.”

Blood is needed by cancer patients, people with blood disorders, premature babies, transplant recipients, trauma victims, and more. Steady and consistent blood donations are key to a strong blood supply.

Donors can cast their donation to the IU Blood Donor Challenge at the following American Red Cross donor centers:

  • Fort Wayne Donor Center: 1212 E. California Road, Fort Wayne
    Monday & Tuesday: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
    Wednesday & Thursday: noon – 6 p.m.
    Friday & Saturday: 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Lutheran Hospital Donor Center: 7900 W. Jefferson Blvd. Suite 107, Fort Wayne
    Monday through Wednesday: noon – 6 p.m.
    Thursday through Saturday: 6 a.m. – noon
    Sunday: By appointment only

All blood and platelet donors who give during the month of October will be entered to win a weekend getaway for two to the Inn and Spa in Cedar Falls, Ohio and a zip-line tour through Hocking Hills Canopy Tours.

The results of the 2010 IU Blood Donor Challenge will be announced at the IU vs. Iowa football game on Nov. 6.

About the American Red Cross
The Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region needs to collect about 500 units of blood a day to meet patient need in 60 hospitals. In addition to supplying nearly half of the nation’s blood, the American Red Cross teaches lifesaving skills, provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization—not a government agency—and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
