Ivy Tech Community College Board of Trustees Extends Contract of President Thomas J. Snyder through June 2014
(INDIANAPOLIS) – The Ivy Tech Community College State Board of Trustees unanimously voted to extend the contract of Ivy Tech President Thomas J. Snyder. This upcoming 2010-11 school year marked the final year of Snyder’s original contract. The state board extended that contract by three additional years to conclude June 30, 2014.
“Ivy Tech Community College is making a difference in the lives of so many students looking for the right path to a career or in some cases a career change. The demand for Ivy Tech has been well documented as has the financial situation of our state yet Ivy Tech continues to respond to the needs of Hoosiers. It is clear that Tom Snyder’s leadership in Indiana has been critical during these changing times,” Ivy Tech State Trustee Kaye H. Whitehead said. “Ivy Tech’s vision of Changing Lives and Making Indiana Great is clearly the vision that Tom has and he has led a remarkable team of faculty and staff that is dedicated to changing the lives of so many. He leads by example as he himself has a passion to help Hoosiers across the state improve themselves and in turn improve Indiana. We are fortunate to have him leading our team for years to come.”
Appointed to President in 2007, Snyder leads the strategic, academic and operational processes of Indiana’s largest and fastest growing college with more than 150,000 students annually at 23 campuses and 100 learning centers that provide a full-spectrum of educational resources, transfer credits, associate degrees, workforce training and professional certification. Ivy Tech is the nation’s largest singly accredited statewide community college.
“The team of faculty and staff we have here at Ivy Tech is amazing. Just ask our students and they will tell you that is what makes this place special. It happens from the time they walk in that door and talk to our student services staff and during every one of their classes. Our students know right away we are here to help them. I am honored to be a small part of this team of faculty and staff that is here to help our students and help our state,” President Snyder said. “I want to thank the State Board of Trustees for giving me the opportunity to continue to be a part of this team here at Ivy Tech Community College.”
During his first three years, President Snyder successfully led the college through a 10-year accreditation process and has been nationally recognized for efforts and achievements including being featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education as he was named one of seven community college Presidents making a difference. He earned the 2009 Freedom Award recipient by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission for providing major, positive, and societal influence in the community.
During his tenure, the college has experienced its largest semester enrollments consecutively over the last five semesters as follows: Spring 2010 = 119,773; Fall 2009 = 110,359; Spring 2009 = 90,627; Fall 2008 = 86,130; and Spring 2008 = 79,366.
Much of the growth has occurred during changing financial times in the state. During President Snyder’s tenure Ivy Tech has implemented various efficiency processes that have resulted in annual and one-time cost savings and new revenues of nearly $40 million. This savings has allowed the College to hire over 350 new faculty and staff members during this growth period.
In addition to growth in the Ivy Tech classroom, President Snyder has led the College’s efforts in expanding its dual credit offerings. Nearly 17,000 high school students are enrolling in Ivy Tech dual credit courses, an increase of nearly 50 percent in just the last year.
President Snyder has also installed numerous growth and expansion initiatives to meet the future student services requirements. A negotiated agreement with Dell Computers now provides students with significant computer discounts. A new partnership with Follett Bookstores has allowed for more resources and options for students. Several new facilities projects have been announced including the largest in the College’s history with the expansion of the downtown Indianapolis campus.
During President Snyder’s tenure, Ivy Tech has realized upgraded bond ratings from both Standard and Poor’s Ratings and Fitch Ratings. Under his leadership the College recently introduced its new Accelerating Greatness strategic plan, which was developed, and continues to be developed, in collaboration with over 6,000 faculty and staff and hundreds of stakeholders throughout the state.
“This is a very collaborative strategic planning process. We are all working together toward our four strategies that include the success of our students, Indiana citizens being globally competitive, quality and efficiency, and an adequate and sustainable resource base,” President Snyder said. “We know we must accelerate what we do here at Ivy Tech in order to continue to provide that trained workforce that our state needs today and well into the future.”
Prior to joining Ivy Tech, President Snyder led an extensive career in advanced manufacturing and alternative energy. He was co-founder of Remy International, Inc., a spin-off of General Motors, where he held the position of CEO/President for 11 years. While at Remy, he expanded the product line of hybrid-electric drive systems, which are now marketed throughout the world. This billion dollar auto supplier is the only US-based manufacturer of these products. Upon retirement at Remy, he established the Flagship Energy Systems Center in Anderson focusing on bringing Indiana technology to the world energy market.
As a recognized leader in advanced manufacturing and alternative energy, he continues to have leadership positions in this area, including co-founder of both Conexus and Energy Systems Network, as well as board memberships with the National Association of Manufacturers, Great Lakes Manufacturing Council, and Ener1.
He began his career at General Motors Corporation, advancing through executive positions in engineering, marketing and sales for automotive batteries, magnetics and electric vehicle components. He graduated from Kettering University, formerly General Motors Institute, in 1967 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Snyder also holds a master’s degree in business administration from Indiana University and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Anderson University. Snyder also completed a six-year tour of duty with the Air Force with research and development assignments at Vandenberg and Andrews Air Force Bases and the Pentagon.
