Press release from the Allen County Board of Commissioners:
Commissioners Proclaim July 30 “Voices of Unity Choir Day”
Gold medal-winning youth group honored during ceremony(July 30, 2010) – Fresh off their recent gold medal performances at the 2010 World Choir Games in China, the Voices of Unity Choir was honored today by the Allen County Board of Commissioners and City of Fort Wayne officials at a special ceremony.
Commissioners presented a proclamation to the group recognizing July 30, 2010, as “Voices of Unity Choir Day” in Allen County. Commissioner Nelson Peters read the proclamation, which in part said, “The accomplishments of the Voices of Unity Choir have brought great honor and distinction not only to themselves, but to Allen County, Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana and have made this group of young people a shining example for all.”
Competing against 400 other choirs from more than 90 countries, the Voices of Unity Choir was awarded a gold medal in the Popular Choral Music category and also received a gold medal and was named Grand Champion in the Gospel and Spiritual Category. It marked the first time a choir from Indiana had been invited to participate in what’s described as the “Olympics of Choral Music.”
Thanks to donations from businesses, individuals, community organizations and local churches, the Choir was able to raise the funds necessary to travel to China and compete.
“We encourage all residents to congratulate these young people and their leaders for their devotion and commitment to achieving their ‘Dreams of Gold,'” said Peters.
