Press release from the American Red Cross:

American Red Cross Offers Free Summer Course in “Exploring Humanitarian Law” for Area Teachers
Offers opportunity for instructors, students to explore global issues

The American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana Multicultural Information eXchange (MIX) program and the IPFW Division of Continuing Studies will offer an Exploring Humanitarian Law program. Provided through a special grant, this program offers free, high-quality instruction and materials to assist secondary teachers and post-secondary instructors in connecting real-world events to the classroom. Many students are exposed to war in the news media nearly each day, but few Americans understand the challenges in war zones and how to make a difference for vulnerable people in conflict zones. These interesting and flexible resources are designed to coincide with existing lesson plans.

The Exploring Humanitarian Law program helps students understand how conflicts at home and abroad intersect with the rights and protections of those impacted. The program connects current events and real-life questions to the classroom. From the treatment of prisoners of war during the Revolutionary War, to the establishment of international courts at Nuremburg, to the use of child soldiers in conflicts around the world, the program is designed to fit seamlessly into a wide variety of courses, including sociology, history, law, literature and civics.

The free, four-hour Exploring Humanitarian Law program course will be offered to area secondary teachers and post-secondary instructors in one of two sessions on Thursday, August 5 from 12 noon until 4 p.m. or 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne. If requested, $40 fee for CRU/PGP/CEU documentation will be assessed. Seating space is limited in each session. Register by July 30. For more information or to register, contact Irene Paxia, American Red Cross MIX Director, at (260) 484.9336 ext. 233 or paxiai@usa.redcross.org.
