Students Complete Robot Challenge at IPFW
(July 2, 2010) – Ten students were challenged to take the fun of robotics and apply it to a relevant issue, Homeland Security. The students in grades 8 through 12 spent a week at the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) robotics camp offered in collaboration between the Department of Engineering and the College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science K12 Outreach. They completed the VEX Robotic Challenge and seven of them took home prizes.
Participants worked in teams to construct and program their VEX robot in preparation for the mini-competition. The competition required the robots to perform specific tasks for points, using the 2010 theme, “Homeland Security.” Instructors were Zhuming Bi, IPFW assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and David Brumm, a retired Fort Wayne Community Schools teacher, with student assistant Ian Brumm.
The results of the competition were the following:
- First Place Robot Performance: Daniel Minnich, Avon High School, and Jacob Scheitlin, Leo Junior/Senior High School
- Second Place Robot Performance: Chris Heiny, St. John the Baptist School New Haven, and Joshua Martin, Imagine MASTer Academy
- Tech Talk Champs (tie): Logan Bowling, Blackhawk Middle School, and Sam Stein, Bishop Luers High School
- Most Valuable Consultant: Derek DeWitt, Leo Junior/Senior High School
Other participants receiving recognition certificates were Kayla Davis, Garrett Middle School; Jeremy Whitman, Woodside Middle School; and Justin Zerkle, Imagine MASTer Academy.
