Free lead screenings offered on Tuesdays
(July 2, 2010) – The Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health will offer free lead screenings for children on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. at the Medical Annex.
Walk-ins are accepted but parents are encouraged to make an appointment. The Medical Annex is located at 4813 New Haven Ave.
Lead poisoning can cause irreversible damage to the brains and other organs of developing children. Serious effects can include lowered intelligence, behavior disorder, and slowed physical development. Once poisoned, a young child’s chances for academic, social and occupational success are significantly diminished.
The primary cause of lead poisoning in children is exposure to lead-based paint, which is commonly found in homes built before 1978. Although not used in homes anymore, deteriorating lead-based paint creates dust and debris which can settle on toys, windowsills and floors and be easily ingested by children. Children may also be exposed to lead through other sources such as home health remedies, imported candies or toys.
Lead poisoning is truly a silent menace and often times there are no outward signs or symptoms. A blood lead test is the only sure way to know if a child has lead poisoning.
