Score! IHSAA selects Fort Wayne / Allen County as site for 2011 Girls Basketball State Finals!
(June 25, 2010) – The IHSAA announced today that Fort Wayne will be hosting the 36th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Girls Basketball State Finals on March 5, 2011.
Last year the event was held in Fort Wayne for the first time ever, and due to the outstanding community support, superb facility and strong attendance, they have awarded this prestigious event to Fort Wayne once again.
“This is a great win for the entire community! Bringing this event to Fort Wayne last year was a coup, but having them return in 2011 is a real sign of what a strong sports destination we are,” says Dan O’Connell, President/CEO Fort Wayne/Allen County CVB.
“We are delighted that the IHSAA will be bringing the girls basketball state finals to the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum for the second consecutive year,” said Memorial Coliseum General Manager Randy Brown. “This selection is a tribute to the cooperative effort of our event marketing partners in Fort Wayne. We look forward to hosting this championship event once again.”
Once again, the community came together in a team effort to welcome this group and their fans. A few of the players on our local team include: Fort Wayne/Allen County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, Fort Wayne Sports Corporation, Allen County, City of Fort Wayne and others.
By the numbers:
- Last year’s attendance was 12,500 – we would expect the same in 2011.
- The economic impact of this event is significant – we estimate it to be between $350,000 to $450,000 dollars, depending on which teams qualify for the state finals.
The Convention & Visitors Bureau conducts marketing and sales programs to attract visitors to our destination’s convention and tourism facilities so that our community can derive the economic and social benefits of a prosperous tourism industry.
