Press release from Fort Wayne Community Schools:

FWCS expands English Language Learners program

Fort Wayne Community Schools is expanding the English Language Learners program to nine additional elementary schools in the fall to meet the needs of the growing number of students who come to school with limited English skills.

Arlington, Bloomingdale, Brentwood, Haley, Lindley, Price, Washington, Washington Center and Weisser Park will add ELL services for the 2010-11 school year. The schools join 15 elementary schools already staffed with at least one ELL teacher: Abbett, Adams, Fairfield, Forest Park, Franke Park, Harrison Hill, Holland, Indian Village, Lincoln, Maplewood, Northcrest, Scott, South Wayne, Study and Waynedale.

With the additional service sites, most students who are not yet proficient in English will be able to receive ELL services at their home schools. This expansion will lead to more students receiving ELL services, which should translate into increased student achievement.

All new incoming kindergarten students for 2010-11 who qualify for ELL will fall under the new ELL boundaries and will be able to receive ELL services at their home school, if they live within the boundaries of one of the 24 schools were services are available. ELL students in the Glenwood Park or Harris boundaries can opt to attend Northcrest; students in the Nebraska boundary can attend Study; and students in the St. Joseph Central or Shambaugh boundaries can attend Holland.

Current ELL students will be allowed to finish their elementary years at the school they now attend. If an incoming kindergarten student has an older elementary sibling already attending a different ELL elementary school, the older sibling will be allowed to transfer to the new ELL site (their home school) to keep the siblings together.

FWCS will continue to offer ELL services at Miami, Northwood and Shawnee middle schools and North Side and South Side high schools.
