Ivy Tech granted statewide re-accreditation for Human Services program
(INDIANAPOLIS – June 7, 2010) – Ivy Tech Community College has been re-accredited by the Council for Standards in Human Services Education through May 2014 for the college’s Human Services degree program.
The Council of Standards in Human Service Education (CSHSE) was established in 1979 to give focus and direction to education and training in mental health and human services in the United States. As part of the guidance, the CSHSE established a set of standards by which colleges, universities and other mental health and human services-based training programs to follow. The CSHSE National Standards are based on national research of human service educational programs that are grounded in relationship with service providers in their communities. In addition, the Standards have been confirmed through external research and updated based on the self-studies and input from CSHSE Members.
The CSHSE accreditation is a voluntary accreditation process for human service programs who select to comply with the standards set by the CSHE. Accreditation is based on 20 core standards, including faculty credentials, curriculum structure, community partners and transferability of credits.
Program Chairs from the human services programs from each of Ivy Tech’s 14 regions and Terri Polk, Dean of the School of Public and Social Services in Indianapolis, participated in the accreditation process, which took about a year to complete The accreditation process involved a self-study report and a site visit evaluation by a team from the Council for Standards in Human Service Education.
“Since the accreditation is voluntary, Ivy Tech is demonstrating that the college is holding itself to a higher standard in ensuring that our students receive the knowledge and skills to meet the demands of the human service field,” said Eric Comstock, Program Chair of the Human Services program in Indianapolis. “It also speaks to the various academic opportunities and disciplines for our graduates, including social work, mental health, gerontology and addictions.”
The college currently has nearly 2,000 students enrolled in its Human Services program. The program is offered in each of Ivy Tech’s 14 regions.
