Burmese Literacy Fair at IPFW Celebrates Volunteers and Hero
(June 8, 2010) – To recognize the outstanding volunteers who help make a difference in young Burmese immigrant children lives and to commemorate Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s 65th birthday, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will host the sixth annual Aung San Suu Kyi Literacy Fair. The event will take place Saturday, June 19 from 10:30 a.m. to noon in Neff Hall, Room 101. It is free and open to the public.
The literacy fair, organized by Kyaw T. Soe, program director of The IPFW New Immigrant Literacy Program, will include awareness for Aung San Suu Kyi, a video of an interview and speech by Kyi, and The Peacemaker Portraits, which are exhibits by a local Burmese artist that showcase Kyi, Martin Luther King Jr., the Dali Lama, and Mahatma Gandhi. Also, 26 outstanding volunteer tutors will receive a recommendation letter and certificate from the IPFW School of Education.
The fair is sponsored by the IPFW New Immigrant Literacy Program, the IPFW School of Education’s Educational Studies Department, the Optimist Club of Downtown Fort Wayne, and The News-Sentinel.
Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese leader who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. She has been imprisoned in her own home, on and off, since 1989. The fair serves as a tribute to her heroic acts and her insistence on a nonviolent struggle to return democracy to Burma.
