Press release from the Allen County Highway Department:

Wet May Causes Aboite Center Road Work Delay
First phase of improvement project now scheduled to finish July 9

(June 2, 2010) – Above-average rainfall during the month of May is being blamed for delaying completion of the first phase of the Aboite Center Road improvement project.

Officials with the Allen County Highway Department today said they now expect work on the section of Aboite Center between Dicke Road and Coventry Lane will be finished by July 9.

Fort Wayne averages 3.75 inches of rain during May. But last month, 6.6 inches of rain fell on the Summit City, preventing crews from finishing their work by mid-June as was originally anticipated.

The posted detour for eastbound traffic will continue to be south on Homestead Road to US 24 then east to Aboite Center and the reverse for westbound traffic. Traffic will be maintained at the intersection of Coventry Lane and Aboite Center.

Despite the delay, the entire $6.6 million project is still slated to be finished by mid-October. The improvements include widening Aboite Center from two lanes to four 12-foot wide lanes with curb and gutter, adding an eight-foot wide multi-use path on the north side and a five-foot wide sidewalk along the south side of the road.
