Aquatic opportunities for youth

The Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Department offers wonderful aquatic opportunities for youth during the summer months:

Learn-to-Swim for Ages 1 – 15

Morning and evening Learn-to-Swim sessions are available for youth from June 22 – August 3. Learn-to-Swim is offered in conjunction with the American Red Cross and adheres to national standards for Red Cross aquatic programs. Classes are held at Northside Pool in Bob Arnold Park for boys and girls ages 1 – 15. Each Learn-to-Swim session consists of eight 45-minute lessons held Tuesday through Friday over a two week period. Pre-school and Toddler lessons are 30 minutes. Four Learn-to-Swim sessions will be offered this summer. Participants must be of minimum age by June 1, 2010. Fee: $30/$25 for siblings in the same session.

Lifetime Sports Academy – Free Swimming Lessons

FREE group swim lessons will be held Monday through Thursday mornings during the Lifetime Sports Academy at the McMillen Aquatic Center, June 14 – July 30, and will be taught by certified Red Cross Learn-to-Swim instructors. Those who complete level 3 lessons will be eligible for the Competitive Swim Training Program where the emphasis will be on stroke improvement, endurance, starts and turns. All Academy participants are invited to enjoy the water slides, water playground, sand play areas and sand volleyball at the McMillen Aquatic Center during the Open Swims on Friday mornings from 9:30-11:30 am.

Summer Playground Program – Free Swimming Lessons
Boys and girls who participate in the FREE Summer Programs at Jennings, Weisser, Cooper and Memorial may participate in free swimming lessons at Memorial Pool Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 – 11 am.

Friday Family Fun Day
On Fridays throughout the summer, enjoy our new Friday Family Fun Day and receive $1 off of regular (day) admission. It is good for up to 6 family members and an adult must be present.

Open Swim for Disabled Youth at Northside Pool
A FREE open swim for children with disabilities or special needs will be held Mondays from 5:15 – 6:15pm beginning June 14 at Northside Pool. No pre-registration is necessary. A parent must accompany each child in the water. Please check in before entering the pool.

Junior Lifeguard Training
Youth who would like to participate in the Ellis & Associate Lifeguard Training program must be 11-17 years of age and demonstrate the ability to: swim 50 yards, tread water for 1 minute and dive and retrieve an item from 10 feet of water. Participants will learn First Aid, CPR and water rescue techniques. The class also includes conditioning drills. Students successfully completing the program will receive a t-shirt and Junior Lifeguard Patch and may be eligible for future training and employment with the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Aquatics program. This program will meet Monday-Friday, 10 -10:45am, beginning June 15.
