Ivy Tech to host statewide robotics workshops for teachers

(INDIANAPOLIS, May 4, 2010) – Indiana high school teachers wishing to start a new robotics program for their schools are invited to attend one of the free, three-day, regional training events, hosted by Ivy Tech Community College and partially funded by Indiana’s Department of Workforce Development.

Designed for teachers wishing to introduce their students to interactive, hands-on robotic skills, construction and competition, the Robotics Educator is an intensive three-day course, complete with a robot-building kit and software that teachers can take back to their classrooms as a turnkey, student-ready program. Just add the trained instructor and lots of excited kids, highly motivated to design, build, program and compete for statewide and national competition honors.

Ivy Tech instructor Daniel Ward II pioneered high school robotics training programs and has led teacher training seminars for many years. Regional sessions throughout the summer are scheduled at these Ivy Tech campuses:

  • June 7-9 Evansville
  • June 14-16 Columbus
  • June 21-23 Bloomington
  • June 28-30 Fort Wayne
  • July 12-14 Valparaiso
  • July 19-21 Madison
  • July 26-28 Kokomo
  • August 2-4 Indianapolis (Lawrence Campus)

Since 2005, more than 600 teachers have received instruction, robotics starter kits, manuals and study guides to assist their introduction of automation technology to their students.

“Teachers enjoy the training and really get into the interactive learning that is part of building, programming and making the robot perform tasks. They can’t wait to get their students involved,” said Ward.

School administrators and teachers wishing to learn more about the robotics program or sign up for one of the free regional training seminars may contact Dan Ward at 765-459-0561 ext. 385.
