Letter Carriers’ Food Drive Set for May 8th
The 18th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) Food Drive to “Stamp Out Hunger” is scheduled for Saturday, May 8, 2010. Local residents are asked to put canned goods and non-perishable items by their mailboxes on May 8; their letter carrier will collect the food and it will be distributed to local residents by way of food banks and pantries.
The Letter Carriers’ food drive is the largest food drive in the nation and is held annually on the second Saturday in May in more than 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Last year, local residents stepped up to the challenge and collected 453,513 pounds of food for the 2009 Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. That number is 100,000 more pounds of food than in 2008 and was the largest amount in the country for a community of Allen County’s size.
Partners in the local and national effort include the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, U.S. Postal Service’s Priority Mail, Campbell Soup Company, Valpak Direct Marketing, United Way Worldwide, AFL-CIO, and Feeding America.
