CANI, Parkview Whitley Hospital partner for March 3 insurance fair

(February 22, 2010) CANI (Community Action of Northeast Indiana) and Parkview Whitley Hospital have teamed up to hold an insurance fair March 3 to help area residents without insurance coverage complete applications for social-service program assistance. The insurance fair will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Marshall Center Gymnasium, 107 N. Walnut St., Columbia City. The insurance fair is the latest of several put on by various organizations in Whitley County over the past year.

“We are living in a time of great need, with more and more families in northeastern Indiana facing the threat and reality of being uninsured,” said Joe Conrad, executive director, CANI. “Help is available in the form of social-service programs, but many are not aware of these resources. We hope this event will expose people to these helpful healthcare options.”

While the future of healthcare evolves on the national stage, local organizations continue to address the immediate needs of area residents who are without adequate health insurance. Several state-funded programs are available, but many Hoosiers remain without coverage.

According to U.S. Census Bureau figures, in 2006 there were a total of 3,081 uninsured adults and 828 uninsured children living in Whitley County. Given the current economic conditions, those numbers may have increased. In July 2006, Whitley County had a 5.4 percent unemployment rate, but as of December 2009, the unemployment rate was 11 percent.

The documentation requirements for these applications can be lengthy. The requirements can be found on the Covering Kids & Families Northeast Indiana Coalition’s Web site.
