Get the beat with a taiko drumming workshop at the Fort Wayne Dance Collective with Chicago’s John Yost
(February 10, 2010) Fort Wayne Dance Collective and Fort Wayne Taiko are pleased to announce a taiko drumming workshop with John Yost, Sunday, February 21 from 9 am to 2 pm. Registration cost is $75 for this day-long intensive.
Yost has performed and recorded internationally. He has studied in Africa, Japan, and in the USA with master drummers and facilitators and is degreed in Percussion from Northeastern University in Illinois (1992). He has facilitated drum circles for conferences, corporations, schools, community groups and at major events worldwide. Yost is a leader and performer in both Dahui-Ensemble du Rhythm and Kaiju Daiko and has consulted as an entertainment coordinator on world class events. He teaches ongoing West African drum classes, Japanese Taiko classes and facilitates a weekly community drum circle. Yost is also the author of the best-selling instructional video series entitled “John Yost Teaches”. John is a member of the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild and a Remo endorsed facilitator.
What is taiko drumming?
Taiko, which means “big drum” in Japanese, is a drumming and movement art form from ancient Japan. In taiko, the movement is as important as the rhythm — drummers play rhythms with sticks using choreographed arm movements while dancing from drum to drum. Drums (at least those used by Fort Wayne Taiko) are made out of 50-gallon bourbon barrels, skinned at both ends in cowhide and played in horizontal, diagonal and vertical positions.For more information or to register, call the Fort Wayne Dance Collective at 260-424-6574 or email info@fwdc.org.
