Teachers, principal sleep outside for Northwood fundraiser

Press release from Fort Wayne Community Schools:

Teachers, principal sleep outside for Northwood fundraiser

All month, Northwood Middle School students have been raising money for Matthew 25 as part of the annual Aunt Elena’s Hair Care Challenge. In the past, nearly $20,000 has been raised for The American Cancer Society, The Lupus Foundation, The Darfur Schools Project, The American Parkinson Disease Foundation, The Lahna Gibson Memorial Foundation and Lutheran Children’s Pediatric
Oncology. Last year alone, they raised more than $5,000 for Lutheran Children’s Hospital. This year, the students decided to focus on those in need of health service at Matthew 25.

Fund-raising activities included selling CDs of Northwood students’ music, selling T-shirts, asking for business sponsorship, getting hair don’ts (bad hair styles) and having a staff outdoor sleep-over. Students were challenged to raise $2,000, and if they reached their goal, teachers would sleep outside for up to three nights. Principal Adam Swinford said if the amount reached $3,000, he would join the teachers for a night. Swinford will join about a dozen teachers outside of Northwood Middle School at about 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22. Teachers will return for a cook-out and overnight stay after school on Monday, Nov. 23 and stay over night again Tuesday, Nov. 24.

On Wednesday, Nov. 25, students will attend a benefit concert at 1:30 p.m. put on by students involved in the television production program to celebrate the success of the project.
