recognize the sacrifices veterans have made.

Listed are some of the programs taking place this month:

  • Irwin Elementary School, 3501 S. Anthony Blvd., will have two members of the Air National Guard conduct a flag ceremony at 9:05 a.m. during Blastoff, the school’s weekly gathering.

Tuesday, November 10th

  • Jefferson Middle School, 5303 Wheelock Road, will have a flag-raising ceremony at 8:05 a.m. The eighth-grade band will perform “America the Beautiful,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and other selections. All veterans are invited to attend.

Students have invited parents or other family members who are veterans or are on active duty. Veterans who are currently employed by FWCS have been invited to attend and will be recognized. There is a photo “Wall of Honor” in the school foyer that includes photos of family members who are currently in the military or are veterans.
  • Ward Education Center, 3501 Warsaw St., will be hosting its first ever Veterans Day program at 1:15 p.m. The four branches of the armed services will be formally presenting the colors and delivering speeches to the students. The program will also include remembering those who are Missing in Action. Community members have been invited to attend the program. Students are also participating in poster and essay contests based on Veterans Day themes.

Thursday, November 12th

  • Students at Blackhawk Middle School, 7200 E. State Blvd., have been collecting goods and supplies as part of Operation Care Packages. Students will also submit reports to their teachers based on interviews they did with veterans who served during a time of conflict. Those students who did not have someone they knew who had served had the opportunity to interview a veteran at school.

Friday, November 13th

  • Lane Middle School, 4901 Vance Ave., will host a Veterans Day breakfast at 7 a.m. to honor and recognize the men and women who have served our community in any capacity, combat or non-combat, through military service.
