Veteran’s Day Blood Drive

Press release from the American Red Cross:

Veteran’s Day Blood Drive
American Legion to Honor Local Veteran’s

The American Legion David Parrish Post 296 will host a “Battle of the Armed Forces” Blood Drive on Veterans Day, to honor military veterans and active military personnel. The blood drive will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the American Legion Post, located at 130 W. Tillman Road in Fort Wayne. The public is encouraged to come out and support their local veterans with a blood donation.

“Donating blood is a great way for everyone in the community to show support for local heroes. The need for blood is constant and you never know when you or someone you love may need it,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO of Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. “We hope everyone will come out and donate blood and show support to our military men and women during this blood drive.”

First started as a relief effort to provide lifesaving plasma and blood for soldiers during World War II, the Red Cross initiated a national blood program that collected 13.3 million pints of blood for use by the armed forces. After World War II, the Red Cross introduced the first nationwide civilian blood program that now supplies nearly 40 percent of the nations blood supply. The Red Cross continued to provide services to members of the armed forces and their families, including during the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf wars.

In addition to showing support for our military men and women through blood donation, the Red Cross will offer another way for the community to show their support. For the third year in a row, the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes will work together to send holiday cards to service members, veterans, and their families. Cards will be available at this blood drive for members of the community to sign as part of this campaign. To find out more about the 2009 Holiday Mail for Heroes visit redcrossofnei.org.
