FWCS celebrates Red Ribbon Week
Several Fort Wayne Community Schools will recognize Red Ribbon Week with fun activities to encourage students to stay away from drugs.
The Red Ribbon Campaign was started by the National Family Partnership after drug traffickers in Mexico City killed DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. Using Red Ribbons is designed to present a unified and visible commitment towards creating a drug-free America. Congress and the President declared the last week in October (Oct. 23-31) as Red Ribbon Week, but this year, many schools are celebrating it Oct. 19-23.
Schools across the country, including those in FWCS, use Red Ribbon Week to reinforce the drug-free messages students are taught throughout the year.
Schools participating Oct. 19-23
- Indian Village, 3835 Wenonah Lane, will invite Berne Police Officer Earl Hough to speak to students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and their effects on the body. He will visit the school from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
- Price Elementary School, 1901 W. State Blvd., will celebrate the week with the theme “Don’t Monkey around with Drugs.” All week there will be butcher block paper in the hallway and the children can sign it pledging that they will not monkey around with drugs. On Monday, everyone will be asked to wear red and red ribbons will be given out. On Tuesday, temporary tattoos that say “Don’t Monkey Around with Drugs” will be given out. On Wednesday, students will receive bracelets with the theme and will write about activities they could do instead of drugs. The card they write on will be entered into a drawing for a backpack with the theme message on Friday. On Thursday, students will receive stickers with the theme message.
- Washington Elementary, 1015 W. Washington Blvd., will celebrate Red Ribbon Week with a different theme each day. Monday will be “Use Your Head, Say No to Drugs,” and a hat day. Tuesday will be “Drugs are Crazy” with students wearing crazy socks. Wednesday will be “Real Athletes Don’t Use Drugs,” with everyone wearing their favorite team’s attire. Thursday is “Drugs are Wacky” with wild and wacky hair. Friday is red day.
Schools participating Oct. 26-30
- Bloomingdale Elementary, 1300 Orchard St., will kick off Red Ribbon Week on Monday by passing out ribbons and allowing students to wear hats for “Put a Cap on Drugs Day.” Tuesday will be “Don’t Let Drugs Turn Your Life Inside Out Day,” and students will wear their clothing inside out. On Wednesday, students will receive pencils and wear their craziest outfit for “Drugs Will Make You Do Crazy Things Day.” Thursday, students will wear sneakers for “Don’t Let Drugs Sneak Up on You Day.” Students will wear anything red, white or blue on Friday for “Take a Stand for a Drug-Free America Day.”
- Students at Croninger Elementary, 6700 Trier Road, will sign a pledge to stay drug free. After the pledge is signed, students will link the pledges together to form a chain that will be strung down the hallway as a visible reminder all week to remain drug free for life. On Monday, students will receive red ribbons to wear and teachers will receive red apples. Tuesday is “Tie up Drugs Day” when everyone wears ties. Wednesday is “Turn Your Back on Drugs Day” when students wear their clothes backwards. Thursday is “I’m Too Smart for Drugs Day,” and students will receive Smarties candy. Friday is “Wear Red Day.”
- At Forest Park Elementary, 2004 Alabama Ave., all students will receive Red Ribbon bracelets. The school’s theme for the week is “Drug Free is the Key.” Students will participate in a door-decorating contest Wednesday with winners receiving a pizza party for their classroom. Spirit Week will consist of Monday – Wear Red Day; Tuesday – PJ Day; Wednesday – Wacky Wednesday; Thursday – Hat Day; and Friday – costumes or Forest Park spirit wear.
- The PTA at Franke Park Elementary, 828 Mildred Ave., is sponsoring a food drive during Red Ribbon Week. Students are asked to bring as many non-perishable food items as possible. There will be a competition between grades and the winning grade will be rewarded with an ice cream party.
- Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Harris Elementary, 4501 Thorngate Dr., will write essays on “How I Can Be Drug Free” and will receive red ribbons. Tuesday will be “Living Drug Free is No Sweat Day,” and students and staff are invited to wear sweats to school. Wednesday is “I Can Say No to Drugs Day,” and everyone will bring a canned food item to school. Thursday is “Wear Red Day.” Friday is “Team Up Against Drugs Day,” when everyone wears their favorite team jersey. The winner of the essay contest also will be announced on Friday.
- Nebraska Elementary, 1525 Boone St., will celebrate the week with spirit days. Monday is “Power Rally Day” with everyone wearing red; Tuesday is “Hats Off Against Drugs Day” when students are allowed to wear hats in school; Wednesday is “Shade Out Drugs Day” with everyone wearing sunglasses; Thursday is “Give Drugs the Slip Day” when students and staff will wear slippers in class; and Friday is “Hugs Not Drugs Day,” and students are invited to bring a stuffed animal to hug.
