10/15 Budget Hearing: Communications

2010 City Civil Budget

Notes from the Fort Wayne City Council Budget Hearing on October 15, 2009.

This post covers notes from the Communications Department budget discussion. The budget for Communications may be downloaded here.

Mitch Harper – doesn’t include radio replacement.

Motorola support is ending.  After January, 2010, may not be able to get parts.  He has contacted the Connecticut State police for a part they are removing, which Fort Wayne will buy for back up.

It will take a full year to evaluate options, request for quotes – most definitely be a 12-month time period.

$14 million approximate share of the City’s cost for new radio system.  This would be for 50% of the infrastructure.  City has 3-1 share of equipment in field.  Will be dependent on each piece of equipment and whether or not it will need to be updated.

Operationally, there would be a few programming changes needed when 9-1-1 consolidation occurs.

Not sure if it will be an RFP or RFQ process.  Would be handled by MCAP.  It would be nice to have some of the processes shared with Council.

Mitch Harper – any communications with school corporations to join in?  Not that he’s heard.
