10/15 Budget Hearing: Animal Care & Control

2010 City Civil Budget

Notes from the Fort Wayne City Council Budget Hearing on October 15, 2009.

This post covers notes from the Animal Care & Control budget discussion. The budget for Animal Care & Control may be downloaded here.

No services were cut, maintained head count.  Travel budget zeroed out for several years.  Some lines (revenue offset) which are cause for concern. Two vehicle rotations – Animal Control officer vans, high mileage and repair costs.

Liz – Head count indicates.  They do have two positions open, wanting to fill them.  The have increased by .5, however, it’s offset by grant.

Microchip line is set at $14,000, probably cost about $17,000.  Not sure about it yet.  They don’t compete with private enterprise.  If they do have to come back, it would be their revenue, it would just (the increase) need to be re-appropriated back to them.

Clothing allowance, for union, is contracted at 500, 800 and 1,200 for a first year officer.

Karen Goldner – No funds come out of taxpayer dollars for medical expenses – it’s all private.  Neuter for  a nickel.  Employees signed waivers and donated their time for the services.

Mitch Harper – registrations have remained flat.  Registering probably about 42% of registrable dogs inside Fort Wayne.  Estimating taggled a little over 18,000 pets.
