Start a new hobby

As winter approaches, consider learning a new hobby to make the long, cold evenings more exciting. The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department is offering the following classes for adults at the Community Center, 233 W. Main St.:

Home Canning, Monday, October 26, 6 – 9 pm
For more than a century, home canning has been a popular way to preserve and enjoy homegrown fruits and vegetables, not to mention fresh-caught seafood and other delicacies. It is safe and economical and requires very little equipment. Join instructor Ann Holsinger as she demonstrates the three most common food preservation methods used today: pressure canning, hot bath canning and freezing. Fee: $23. Registration deadline: October 19.

Continuing Ballroom Dance, Mondays, Oct. 26 – Nov. 30, 7:30 – 8:30 pm
The Continuing class is for dance partners who have taken a Ballroom Dance class with us in the past year. In this class, you’ll add polish and variety to your dancing and include either the Mambo or Rumba to your repertoire. Fee: $35 per person. Registration deadline: October 19.

Web Page Design (50+) Fridays, Oct. 30 – Dec. 11, 10 am – noon
Design your own web pages! We’ll show you how using a page wizard and a page builder. You will learn basic terminology and the concepts needed to build web pages. Learn to create them with a template or from scratch. You will then launch your new page and learn to update and modify it. Experience with Windows, file management, word processing, internet surfing and cut, copy, paste tools is required. Fee: $36. Registration deadline: October 23.

Stained Glass from Start to Finish, Mondays, Nov. 2 – Nov. 30
Stained glass isn’t just for church windows. It can be seen just about everywhere. Learn this beautiful art and begin a new hobby of your own. Beginners will learn by creating a stained glass project of 15 pieces or less. The Continuing class is more challenging with a project of 31 glass pieces or less and requires some previous stained glass experience. Completed pieces will be a total of approximately 120 square inches. Students in each class may choose from several patterns. All necessary tools and materials will be provided. Please wear closed-toe shoes and a long sleeve shirt. Instructor: Juanita Miller. Fee: $83. Registration deadline: October 26.
