Try Something New

Fill your fall days with fun! The Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department is offering the following October classes for adults at the Community Center, 233 W. Main St.:

Beginning Oils, Mondays October 5 – November 23, 6 – 8:30 pm
This class, taught by nationally certified and accredited art instructor Marilyn Copeland, is for those who have taken the Introduction to Oils class and are ready to delve into more in-depth instruction. Fee: $89. Registration deadline: October 5.

Creative Writing, Mondays October 5 – November 23, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Creative writing is aimed at getting people who like writing — poems, short stories, drama, essays, you name it — to put pen to paper. At the end of the class you will have completed a short story of no more than 5,000 words. Fee: $68. Registration deadline: October 5.

Digital Page Design (50+) Tuesdays, October 6 – November 10, 1:30 – 3:30 pm
If you use any computer program at a very basic level to create your own business cards, banners, calendars, CD labels, certificates, envelopes, invitations, labels, letterhead, newsletters, photo pages, postcards and even scrapbook pages, this class will help you expand your skill level. Fee: $36. Registration deadline: October 6.

Civil War, Thursdays, October 8 – November 5, 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Learn all about the Civil War from the first battle to the last. We will discuss the leaders, the losers and the common foot soldier. Children ages 11-17 may attend with an adult at the adult-child rate. Fee: $23, Adult/Child rate: $27. Registration deadline: October 8.

Go Green w/Bags, Tuesdays, October 13 – October 27, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Don’t throw away your old sheets and buttonup, long sleeve shirts. You will make a grocery bag from the shirt and a plastic bag “dispenser” from the sleeve. Please bring an old long sleeve shirt and bed sheet, a sewing machine, sharp scissors, cutting mat, ruler and rotary cutter (if you have them), as well a thread to match your shirt. No experience is required. Fee: $40. Registration deadline: October 6.

Clay Pottery, Thursdays, October 15 – November 19, 6 – 9 pm
Our Clay Pottery class is open to all skill levels. Beginners will learn both hand building and wheel throwing techniques, how to prepare clay, select a design, and various glazing techniques with focused instructor attention. Experienced throwers will work more independently with instructor guidance as necessary. Fee: $99. Registration deadline: October 6.
