Press release from Habitat for Humanity:

Hike for Habitat, Fun at Fox Island

Fort Wayne area youth are getting together to do something really special and fun—they are going to build a house! Join Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity’s Youth United in raising money to build a new home at the “Hike for Habitat” at Fox Island County Park (7324 Yohne Road, Fort Wayne) on Saturday, October 10 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The hikers (groups, families and individuals are all welcome to participate) will gather sponsors prior to the event, then together with friends and other youth explore the woods, raise money, and learn more about Habitat’s Youth United. There will also be prizes! Registration is $15 per hiker (includes park entry fee, t-shirt and food) A $2 park entry fee will be collected at the gate for those over the age of 7 who are not hiking. For those raising over $50 in sponsorships, the registration fee will be refunded. Participants should register before October 1st to obtain a packet to start gathering sponsors and be guaranteed a t-shirt.

Youth United is a youth led committee that brings youth, including Habitat homeowner youth, together from throughout our community to sponsor and build a Habitat home. The youth involved in Youth United learn leadership and teamwork skills, and gain a better understanding of their community and poverty housing, all while making a difference in our community. All students are engaged in fund raising, education and advocacy activities, while those 16-years and older help with the actual house construction. The four goals of Youth United are to involve youth in the community, engage youth in Habitat’s mission of eliminating poverty housing, foster teamwork among diverse groups of youths, and develop youth leaders.
