FWCS Board Meeting: reception and budget – 9/14/2009

Fort Wayne Community Schools press release:

FWCS will honor Teacher of the Year Portia Coe, Budget presentation

Fort Wayne Community Schools will have a reception for Teacher of the Year Portia Coe at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in the cafeteria at the Grile Administrative Center. Coe is the building coach at Irwin, a new position for her that allows her to work with teachers to help them refine their methods and become better teachers. Coe moved to this new position after 22 years as a classroom teacher, the last six as a kindergarten teacher at Irwin.

Coe was selected as Teacher of the Year because of her strength as a teacher, her extensive experience in training teachers through the Region 8 Education Service Center and her use of data to drive instruction. As a building coach, she is now putting all those strengths into practice, including showing teachers how they can use the data they already collect for each student to make sure that all students are learning and growing.

Also on Monday, the FWCS Board of School Trustees will hear a public presentation of the 2010 budget. Chief Financial Officer Kathy Friend will present a report on the district’s eight funds: General, Racial Balance, Capital Projects, Transportation, Bus Replacement, Debt Service, Pension Bond and Museum of Art.

Two weeks after the initial presentation, the public will have a chance to comment on the proposed budget at the public hearing on Sept. 28. School board members will take action on the budget on Oct. 12.
