Arts United Awards $136,000 in Indiana Arts Commission Grants
Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne in its role as Regional Arts Partner for Region 3 to the Indiana Arts Commission has approved grants to 24 regional organizations totally $136,000. The grants were made possible through the Regional Arts Partnership of the Indiana Arts Commission, the State of Indiana’s arts agency with the assistance from the Indiana General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Jim Sparrow, Executive Director, at Arts United states that he “is pleased to have been a part of maintaining this level of funding for Region 3 from the state during very challenging times.” Sparrow emphasizes that the IAC and Arts United are committed to working together to increase support for arts organizations and arts activities “as we continue our advocacy for the important role the arts play in our region and in our state.”
Arts United is northeast Indiana’s granting agent for the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC). As one of the IAC’s 12 Regional Partners, Arts United provides services to 10 counties, including Allen, De Kalb, Huntington, LaGrange, Miami, Noble, Steuben, Wabash, Wells and Whitley.
The awards will be used for a variety of arts activities in the northeast Indiana region. The following organizations and projects received IAC funding for 2009-2010 (webmaster’s note: only those grants awarded in Fort Wayne are being listed):
Arts Project Support Sub-Grantees
- Embassy Theatre Foundation was awarded $7,000 in support of artistic production expenses.
- FAME was awarded $3,500 in support of a 2009 FAME Festival.
- The University of St. Francis-School of Creative Arts was awarded $2,000 in support of The Closer Look Series that brings a diverse group of artists and scholars to Fort Wayne for a series of public lectures providing high quality, multicultural arts programs for underserved populations.
- Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Dept. was awarded $3,500 for the Foellinger Outdoor Theatre Summer Concert/Movie Series that provides outstanding live musical experiences and family movies for citizens of all income categories while ensuring fair payment to musicians.
- Memorial Park Middle School was awarded $2500 for the Jazz Mentorship Project.
- Fort Wayne Area Community Band was awarded $3,100 in support of the winter concert series.
- The Allen County Fort Wayne Historical Society was awarded $1,000 for the Miami Indian Heritage Days Program.
Arts Organization Support Sub-Grantees
- Fort Wayne’s Children’s Choir was awarded $6,500 to support the organization in serving its mission of bringing a well-rounded music education program to a diverse representation of youth and audience members.
- The Unity Performing Arts Foundation was awarded $4,000 in operation support.
- Audiences Unlimited, Inc. was awarded $6,500 to support the Room-to-Room project that enriches the lives of healthcare residents using the arts.
- Fort Wayne Area Community Band was awarded $2,730 for a winter concert series.
- Artlink, Inc. was awarded $7,475 in support of exhibits, children’s art classes, weekly adult drawing sessions, and art workshops.
- Fort Wayne Youtheatre, Inc. was awarded $8,500 in support of four plays, 16 weeks of theatre classes, a school tour play, in-school drama workshops, and a summer theatre camp.
- Fort Wayne Civic Theatre was awarded $15,000 to support a mix of plays and programs representing a variety of artistic expressions that enlighten and educate people of northeast Indiana reaching across boundaries of age, race, creed, nationality and gender.
- Fort Wayne Ballet was awarded $15,000 in operational support of services and programs for northeast Indiana.
- Fort Wayne Dance Collective was awarded $10,000 in support of its mission to provide a respectful environment for people of all ages and abilities to learn, perform, and collaborate using movement, rhythm and language.
- Heartland Chamber Chorale was awarded $6,000 to support its concert series, educational presentations and services.
- Fort Wayne Cinema Center awarded $8,000 to support the best in film to northeast Indiana and present speakers, discussions, educational opportunities for all ages, and special events that enhance the appreciation of film.
