American Red Cross launches ‘It’s all about the Lincolns’ Penny Campaign

American Red Cross press release:

American Red Cross launches ‘It’s all about the Lincolns’ Penny Campaign for local disaster relief

During the months of August and September, the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana will continue to focus on disaster relief awareness and preparedness efforts. Since July, 2008 the local Red Cross has responded to a total of 154 disaster incidents, assisting 1,215 clients in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. Nearly one-third of these clients have been under the age of 15 years. In that time, the Red Cross responded to the ice storms, Whitley County tornado and subsequent flooding in five counties, a bus/car crash, and 135 single family fires, including the Willows of Coventry and the Lake James fires. As part of the world’s largest humanitarian organization, the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana has continued to provide food, clothing, shelter, counseling, and support.

In an effort to raise awareness of and replenish the local disaster relief fund, the Chapter launched the “It’s all about the Lincolns” campaign on August 19, 2009. The goal is to raise one million pennies, or $10,000, by September 30, 2009 through partnerships with local schools, businesses and eateries, including Atz ice cream shops, Zesto (at Coventry), Cold Stone Creamery, the Cookie Cottage, Coney Island, Dave Hill’s Meat Market, Laredo Restaurant & Grocery, Jamison Meats, Pizza Forum, Mill Bread Company, The Bagel Station, House of Greens, Mahnin Burmese Restaurant, Hyde Brothers Books, Every Other Book, Family Christian Bookstores, Wooden Nickel (on N. Anthony Blvd.), Disc Replay, Rustic Hutch, Christopher & Banks, CJ Banks, and others. The American Red Cross hopes to raise the funds through donations of loose change at these and other sites, as well as special collection day events. Those interested in donating towards or participating in the campaign should look for canisters at area businesses and eateries, stop by the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana, call Jeri Rusk at (260) 484-9336 ext. 230, or visit the Red Cross website at redcrossofnei.org.

The local Red Cross will also host a “Look Like Lincoln” photo contest in conjunction with the fundraising campaign. Participants may enter the contest on the Chapter’s website,

download a printable Lincoln mask, customize it and take a photograph while wearing the mask and doing something positive in the community. Submitted photos will be judged on the local Red Cross Facebook page. The winning photo will be announced Oct. 12 and will be featured on the local Red Cross website and monthly e-newsletter. Complete details and rules on the contest are available on-line.
