Use of FamilyWize Cards in Allen County continues to grow

Press release from Allen County:

Use of FamilyWize Cards in Allen County continues to grow
Total savings tops $200,000 mark

As the national debate over affordable health care continues, more and more Allen County residents are using the FamilyWize discount card to help reduce the cost of their prescription drugs.

4,938 claims were filed by county residents in the first six months of 2009, according to figures supplied today by FamilyWize. That represents nearly half of the 10,132 claims filed since the program was first offered in Allen County back in March of 2007.

For the first half of ’09, residents were able to save $89,379 by using the FamilyWize card. The average amount saved on a prescription was $18.10. Since the program’s inception in Allen County, residents have saved nearly $204,000 on their prescription drugs.

FamilyWize cards are primarily for people with no health insurance or prescription coverage. However, they can also be used when people have to buy medicine not covered by their health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or VA benefits.

Most local pharmacies accept the FamilyWize prescription drug discount cards. The cards have no usage or age limits, income requirements or registration forms, and can be used immediately.

FamilyWize cards can be obtained from a variety of participating local partner agencies, municipal and county agencies and departments. People with Internet access can go to the County’s website and click on Community Links to find the FamilyWize website link. There, they can print a card, look up drug prices and get a list of participating pharmacies.

The Allen County Commissioners’ office teamed up with the United Way of Allen County in March of 2008 to help publicize the program and distribute cards in the community.
