Press release from the United Way of Allen County:

United Way Invites Residents to Celebrate Read Across America at Barnes & Noble Glenbrook

United Way of Allen County is inviting residents to celebrate Read Across America this Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Barnes & Noble Glenbrook from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children can create their own books to take home, listen to stories and get a photo taken with the Cat in the Hat and Clifford the Big Red Dog. Charles Cush, a local author and United Way Real Men Read volunteer, will entertain children with a story time at noon.

Volunteers will also be on hand to provide information about Learn United, United Way’s ten-year effort to ensure all local children can read by the end of third grade. More than one-thousand Allen County third-graders fail the ISTEP language test every year, and most of those children never catch up. Learn United aims to connect community volunteers with struggling readers through a variety of tutoring and mentoring programs designed to improve their literacy skills. A wide variety of volunteer opportunities can be found here.

Read Across America focuses on motivating children to read, in addition to helping them master basic skills. The nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on or near March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, community centers and more participate by bringing together kids and books.
