Historic Wells Street Bridge Lighting Project

One of the more exciting items coming up this week will be a press conference releasing details of a lighting project for Fort Wayne Indiana’s Historic Wells Street Bridge. The above rendering is of the project at dawn. I will post details from the press conference next week after it happens.

Anyone wishing to donate should make a check to “Board of Park Commissioners” with a note stating it is for the Wells Street Bridge lighting fund. Mail the check to the Wells Corridor Business Association @ 1307 N. Wells St., Fort Wayne, IN 46808 or drop off donations @ Great Panes Glass, same address or G I Joe’s on Wells. This is tax-deductible because it is part of the Parks.

Did you know?

  1. It is last standing Iron Truss Bridge in Fort Wayne.
  2. In 1986, the bridge was studied for the possiblity of a hotel to be built on it’s deck.

  1. This will be a good thing for two reasons, maybe even a third.
    1. The rendition looks beautiful it will be a welcome addition to a thriving business cluster (FW OUTFITTERS, The Bean, Richards Bakery and the Police & Fire Memorial, etc.)
    2. It should improve safety in that area immensely.
    3. By lighting up the area it might stop some of the illegal chemical dumping that has been going on in that area too.

The only concern I have is the type of lights used as some have been found to throw wildlife into a false sense of daylight and so you have nocturnal and non noc creatures interacting when they are not suppose to be.

    But it does look beautiful!

  2. I am a fourth grade teacher at Haley Elementary in Fort Wayne. As part of our curriculum we study Indiana History. Since this bridge is a historical marker in Fort Wayne, we are interested in this project. I believe that my students would love to help raise money for this venture. It would also give them a sense of community involvment and would be something they would remember for quite awhile. Do you think this is a good idea? Let us know how we can help.
