Press Release:

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Sept. 15, 2008) — St. Joseph Hospital today announced completion of its second major construction project in less than a month. The hospital’s new $7 million, 29,000-square-foot medical office building (MOB) was more than a year in the making. The project included renovation of the existing 36,000 square-foot MOB, which ultimately transformed the new and existing structures into one cohesive space.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 5:15 p.m. Officials from St. Joseph Hospital and Fort Wayne Medical Education Program will participate. The media is also encouraged to attend.

The Fort Wayne Medical Education Program is the primary tenant of the new MOB, occupying most of the three-story facility. Fort Wayne Med Ed has 62 employees and oversees more than 40 family medicine and orthopedic surgery residents throughout a three-to-five year training cycle.

The organization’s Family Medicine Clinic sees 25,000 patients per year. The program also serves as the parent organization for Healthier Moms and Babies and the Allen County Employee Health Clinic.

“Fort Wayne Medical Education Program and Family Medicine Center are excited to be a part of the downtown area,” said Eric Whicker, chief financial officer of Fort Wayne Medical Education Program. “We thank our sponsors, Parkview Hospital, Lutheran Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital, as well as our board of directors, for making our relocation possible.”

“We believe our new facility provides us with a competitive advantage in recruiting family medicine and orthopaedic surgery residents to Fort Wayne,” said Whicker. “It also allows us to better serve the needs of our patients at the Family Medicine Center.”

In 2007, St. Joseph’s MOB initiative was recognized by the Downtown Improvement District as the most strategic project of the year. “The impact of this project was recognized at a time when so much was happening in the downtown area, including the new library and Harrison Square,” explained Chad Towner, chief operating officer of St. Joseph Hospital. “We are thrilled to have the next generation of family practitioners and orthopedists on our campus.”

Approximately 3,500 square feet of the first floor is dedicated to St. Joseph Hospital’s future cardiac rehabilitation and wellness center. This new facility will be open to patients, hospital employees and the general public later this year.

“As we approach the 140th anniversary of St. Joseph Hospital, we continue our commitment to the heart of the city,” said Towner. “We have taken a leadership role during the past five years by reinvesting more than $25 million into the hospital and medical office building on Broadway. The opening of this facility is yet another example of our dedication to downtown Fort Wayne and the surrounding areas.”
